Welcome to Primary Six and Seven. Our teachers are Mrs Vandevyver and Mr George and our classroom assistants are Zara and Corina.
In Primary 6 and 7, we believe that learning should always be engaging and enjoyable. Even though we are the oldest pupils in the school we definitely don’t spend all our time sitting at our desks with our noses in books! We are committed to achieving high standards in literacy and numeracy, while also making time for creative subjects and scientific exploration, ensuring a balanced and enriching curriculum.
Our commitment to our pupils goes beyond academics; we prioritise the wellbeing and emotional health of every child. Through a supportive environment and meaningful experiences, we help our pupils build resilience, confidence, and a positive mindset that prepares them for the next stage of their learning journey.
During Term One our learning focuses on:
Numeracy:
Place Value (Numbers to 1 million, including decimal numbers up to two decimal places),
Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division and using our understanding of these operations in problem solving scenarios,
2D and 3D shape, Area and Perimeter, Time and Angles
Literacy:
In term one we explore punctuation and grammar and apply what we've learned to our writing. We’re now experts on nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, prepositions, adverbs and conjunctions. We’re also learned about commas, speech marks, brackets, hypens, dashes, semi-colons and colons.
We are thoroughly enjoying reading "The Summer I Robbed the Bank" by David O’Doherty together as a class. It's amazing how the discussions based upon on what we've read each day book can end up on almost any topic!
The World Around Us:
Through science, technology, geography, history, music, art and drama we are exploring the topic of "Northern Ireland" this term.
We're looking at the geology of Northern Ireland, famous landmarks, famous sporting figures and inventors and are making our own landscape paintings inspired by the famous work of the English painter David Hockney. We’re learning about the history and science of flight inspired by the famous NI inventor Harry Ferguson.
During Term Two our learning focuses on:
Numeracy:
Fractions, Decimals and Percentages.
Length, Weight, Capacity and Volume.
Literacy:
During term two, we unpack the literary genre of narrative writing by looking at the wide variety of writing styles that fall under the category of ‘narrative’.
We look at narrative poetry (poetry that tells a story), folk tales, fairy tales, fables and playscripts.
We write our own stories and enjoy sharing them with younger pupils in school.
Inspired by Roald Dahl’s “Revolting Rhymes”, we have great fun changing the endings of traditional tales to make our own version of some of the classics.
Throughout our activities we are exploring the writing techniques which make stories interesting and appealing and have looked at personification, similes and metaphors, onomatopoeia and a variety of different ways to hook the reader's interest. It is our aim to use all these techniques in our own writing.
The World Around Us:
In Term 2, our learning will be inspired by the Titanic, serving as a starting point for geography, history, science, art, music, and drama activities. Later in the year, we will visit the Titanic Exhibition Centre to deepen our understanding. Pupils will be encouraged to take an active role in planning our topic-based learning, giving them the chance to explore aspects of geography, science, and history that spark their interest. We will begin by looking at Victorian life in history sessions and investigating the science of floating and water density through practical experiments. From there, the children will help steer the direction of our learning under the overarching theme of ‘Titanic.
